The Best Conversations Happen At Happy Hour, Welcome to Ours!

Physical Therapy Has a Lot of Rules That Aren’t Actually Rules | Jimmy McKay Keynote

Physical therapy has a lot of rules.

The strange part?

Some of them aren’t actually rules.

They’re defaults.

Things we’ve repeated so many times that we stopped asking whether they still make sense.

In this keynote from APTA Florida, I explore what happens when we change the way we look at the problems in front of us.

We’ll talk about communication, careers, patient care, business models, innovation, and the people who decided that “this is how it’s always done” wasn’t a particularly satisfying answer.

Along the way:

• What meeting Eminem taught me about trying too hard to be professional
• Why a conversation in a bar eventually became a podcast
• The difference between what physical therapists sell and what patients actually value
• People in PT who questioned assumptions everyone else accepted
• What a young man named Geiner taught me about agency
• And one question that sits underneath the whole talk:

Why not me?

My core belief is pretty simple:

Most problems get better when you change the way you look at them.

This talk is an invitation to look again.

Presented at the APTA Florida Annual Conference.
